The research activity of the Colloid Chemistry Group is focused in the design and fabrication of novel nanostructured materials for a broad range of applications, including environmental sensing, biosensing, nanomedicine, theranostics, controlled release, catalysis. The typical colloidal length and time scales make it possible to directly observe colloidal particles in real-time using video and confocal microscopy. Advanced colloid chemistry techniques enable tuning of the chemical and physical properties of the particles, allowing development of unique colloidal … Colloid Chemistry has always been an integral part of several chemical disciplines. Ranging from. preparative inorganic chemistry to physical chemistry, resear chers have always been fascinated in. Colloidal dispersions are present in every-day life, from food systems to ceramics.

It is colloid scientists who control the release of active ingredients in pharmaceuticals, who create foams for shaving, and develop new ceramics and microfluidics systems. The overall size of the Department of Colloid Chemistry is about 65 people, covering a wide range of research topics. The effective constituting element of the scientific activi-ties is the “project”, a structure headed by a senior scientist involving a mixture of techni-cians, graduate students and post-docs (3–8 peo-ple). Besides experimental work, also computer simulations and (statistical mechanics) theory form part of our research activities. The combination of chemical synthesis, physical experiments and theory makes colloid chemistry an attractive and interdisciplinary research area, in which people with different interest work.

Colloid, any substance consisting of particles substantially larger than atoms or ordinary molecules but too small to be visible to the unaided eye; more broadly, any substance, including thin films and fibres, having at least one dimension in this general size range, which encompasses about 10 −7 to 10 −3 cm. Colloidal systems may exist as dispersions of one substance in another—for example, smoke particles in air—or as single materials, such as rubber or the membrane of a biological cell.
Colloid science is central to biology, food science and numerous consumer products. Solutions are homogeneous mixtures whose component particles are individual molecules whose smallest dimension is generally less than 1 nm. Within this size range, thermal motions maintain homogeneity by overcoming the effects of gravitational attraction.

The properties of colloidal dispersions are closely linked to the high surface area of the dispersed phase and the chemistry of these interfaces. This natural combination of colloid and surface chemistry represent a major research space and we get to see a variety of categories of colloids based on these basic properties.
Colloidal dispersions are present in every-day life, from food systems to ceramics. The chemistry of colloidal dispersions covers many overlapping fields of science, such as physical chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and biology. It is therefore rare that solely colloidal dispersions are covered. Etymology: The word colloid is derived from a Greek word kolla “glue” and an English word oid “like”.

Describe some of the colloid-related principles involved in food chemistry, such as the stabilization of milk and mayonaisse, the preparation of butter, and the various ways of cooking eggs. Describe the role of colloids in wastewater treatment. We prepare colloidal particles of different shapes, sizes, materials and interactions. Characterization by various experimental techniques and development of theoretical models helps us to understand their physical chemistry.
